Image Title: | PORTRAIT OF A DISTINGUISHED AUTHORESS |
Work Type: | Engraving |
Author: | Samuel E. Brown |
Subject: |
It is a caricature of Margaret Fuller, accompanying an article by Edgar Allan Poe aimed against the Trascendentalists as a group, published in The Broadway Journal, March 8, 1845, p.153. Nevertheless the sketch by Brown, observed today, can be read, as we do, not as an hostile lampoon, but as a sort of tender and humorous portrait focusing on some peculiarities of Margaret’s character: love of culture, courage, determination to fight for her ideals |
